Kenya 2023
Another February trip with Federico Veronesi to revisit the Masai Mara and Amboseli, with the addition of the floodlit waterhole at Lentorre (see separate page) to close the trip. Dry conditions on the Mara but still some good opportunities, especially the hyenas waiting for the last of the lions at the zebra kill and the giraffes with the rising sun. Amboseli had had a severe drought in 2022 and there were many carcasses still in evidence. But the lake bed was therefore dry and we had two episodes with elephants, first a lone male and then a family crossing the lakebed. Another day Federico was determined to find Craig, one of the remaining big tuskers, to the east of the park. The dry conditions also sadly meant there were many cattle herds coming into the park to drink and compete for vegetation with the native herbivores. Lastly there are shots from a helicopter ride from Lentorre Lodge to nearby Lake Magadi with the flamingos over the lake and abstract patterns in the salt pans.
